The basic rule is simple: keep bottle parts out of the sink, wash them in a baby-only basin with a dedicated brush, rinse them well, and let them air-dry completely. Sanitizing is an extra step after washing, not a substitute for it.

You also do not need to treat “baby” dish soap as a medical requirement. A fragrance-free option may be your preference, but the important part is washing every surface and rinsing away the soap.

Set Up a One-Way Cleaning Route

How to Wash Baby Bottles by Hand

1. Wash your hands

Wash with soap and water for 20 seconds before handling the bottle parts.

2. Take the entire bottle apart

Separate the bottle, nipple, ring, cap, and every removable valve, vent, or membrane. Milk can sit under a ring or inside a vent even when the assembled bottle looks clean.

Check the instructions for your exact bottle if you are unsure which pieces should come apart. Never force a valve or membrane that is not designed to be removed.

3. Rinse without putting parts in the sink

Hold each part under running water. Warm or cold water is fine for this first rinse.

Do not set nipples, rings, or bottles directly in the sink. Kitchen sinks and drains can hold germs that you do not want transferred back to feeding equipment.

4. Wash in the dedicated basin

Place all the parts in the baby-only wash basin. Add hot water and dish soap, then scrub every reachable surface with the dedicated bottle brush.

Pay attention to:

  • The bottom and inside shoulder of the bottle
  • Threads around the bottle neck and ring
  • Both sides of the nipple
  • Vent holes, inserts, valves, and membranes
  • Any groove where milk residue can collect

Squeeze soapy water through nipple holes so the opening is cleaned, too. For tiny vents, use only a tool and method approved by the bottle manufacturer; an oversized brush can stretch or damage soft parts.

5. Rinse again

Rinse each piece under running water. If you cannot use running water, rinse in a second clean basin containing fresh water that has not been used for washing.

Look and feel for slippery soap or visible milk film. If a part still feels greasy or smells sour, it is not ready for the drying area.

6. Let every part air-dry

Place the bottle parts on a clean, unused dish towel or paper towel in an area protected from dirt and dust. Leave space around the parts so water can drain and air can reach them.

Do not rub or pat the parts dry with a kitchen towel. Even a towel that looks clean can transfer germs to the feeding surfaces you just washed.

That last step is easy to miss. A dedicated brush is only helpful if the brush itself gets clean and dry.

When Do Bottles Need Sanitizing?

Cleaning removes milk residue and germs from the bottle. Sanitizing happens after cleaning and removes additional germs.

For an older, healthy baby, daily sanitizing may not be necessary when every feeding item is cleaned carefully after each use. That is not the same as a universal weekly schedule; the CDC does not give one.

If your pediatrician or NICU team has given you a stricter plan, use that plan instead of a general age cutoff.

Before first use, clean and sanitize new bottle parts. The FDA describes boiling loose bottles, nipples, caps, rings, and valves for 5 minutes, but check the instructions for your exact bottle first. Not every plastic component, valve, or accessory is safe to boil.

Option 1: Boil heat-safe parts

  1. Put fully disassembled, heat-safe parts in a pot.
  2. Cover them with water.
  3. Bring the water to a boil and boil for 5 minutes.
  4. Remove the parts with clean tongs.
  5. Place them in the clean drying area and let them air-dry completely.

Option 2: Use steam

Use a microwave or plug-in steam system according to both the sanitizer instructions and the bottle maker’s instructions. Clean the bottles first. A steam cycle cannot wash away dried milk.

Option 3: Use the CDC bleach method

The CDC lists diluted bleach as an option when you cannot boil, steam, or use a dishwasher:

  1. Mix 2 teaspoons of unscented bleach into 1 gallon (16 cups) of water in a clean basin.
  2. Submerge all the cleaned items completely, making sure there are no air bubbles trapped inside.
  3. Squeeze the solution through nipple holes.
  4. Soak for at least 2 minutes.
  5. Remove the items with clean hands or clean tongs.
  6. Do not rinse. Place the items in the clean drying area and let them air-dry completely.

Do You Need a Bottle Drying Rack?

No. A rack can make a crowded counter easier to manage, but it is not required for safe bottle washing.

In fact, the CDC says air-drying on a clean, unused dish towel or paper towel is probably more hygienic than using a drying rack. Racks can trap moisture, grow mold or germs, and be awkward to clean around every post and groove.

If you prefer a rack:

  • Use it only for infant feeding items.
  • Choose one you can take apart and clean thoroughly.
  • Position parts so water can drain instead of pooling.
  • Wash, sanitize, and completely dry the rack every few days.
  • Clean and sanitize it at least daily if your baby is under 2 months old, was born prematurely, or has a weakened immune system.

The goal is not a picture-perfect row of matching bottles. The goal is for every milk-contact surface—and the surface holding it—to become completely dry.

Store Bottles Only After They Are Completely Dry

Once every part is dry, wash your hands before reassembling the bottle. Store clean bottles, the dry wash basin, and the dry brush in a protected place, such as a closed cabinet used for clean dishes.

A clean lidded container can also help in a dusty or very small kitchen, but do not seal damp parts inside it. Trapped moisture defeats the whole drying step.

If you keep parts disassembled, make sure clean nipples and valves cannot fall into a drawer holding crumbs or everyday utensils. “Clean but loose on the counter” is not protected storage.

2. Sharing the family sponge or dish brush

The brush for greasy pans should not be the brush for bottle nipples and valves.

During a boil-water notice, flood, hurricane, or other emergency, follow local public-health instructions and the CDC emergency feeding-item guide. Do not wash feeding items near a diaper-changing area, even if that is the only open counter.
