Free Potty Training Chart: Practice One Small Step

Choose one of four small steps to practice with help. If your child chooses to sit for a moment, that can count even without pee or poop. Wet clothes later don't take away the mark. This optional chart has 12 undated spaces; you don't have to fill them.

Free PDFs. No email or child details required.

Each download is one page. Choose the file that matches your paper, then print in portrait at 100% or Actual Size. A pen or crayon is enough; stickers are optional.

Choose one step to practice

Check one option on the chart. Choose something your child is willing to try with your help:

  • I try sitting comfortably on the potty.
  • I try pulling my pants down or up, with help.
  • I let a grown-up know I need help – before or after my clothes get wet.
  • I wash my hands with help.

Asking for help can be a word, a gesture, or your child's usual way of communicating.

Add one mark when your child practices the chosen step. They don't need to do it alone or complete the other steps to get that mark.

A try can count without pee or poop

Say you chose sitting comfortably. Your child chooses to sit for a moment, then wants to get up. Let them get up and mark the practice, even if no pee or poop happened. They don't have to sit longer to earn the mark.

Later, their clothes get wet. Help them change and leave the earlier mark in place.

You can put the chart away

If your child doesn't want to try, dislikes the chart, or the chart isn't helping, put it away. You can still help with potty practice without using a chart. There's no set number of days to use it.

If your child still enjoys the chart when it's full, print another. A full page doesn't mean potty training is finished. When you choose a different step, use a fresh sheet or plain paper and keep the old one.

This chart has no prize at the end. If you've already promised a reward, keep that agreement. Discuss any changes before using different rules.

An optional note for the next grown-up

If your usual childcare record or conversation already covers this, skip this sheet.

You can use this note without the child's chart. Check with the other caregiver before adding it to the routine.

Write what the next person needs to know. Leave unused lines blank; if you don't know, 'unknown' is fine. Describe what happened without guessing why. You don't need to record every potty visit.

Example

Agreed support: Help with pants when asked.

Observation: After lunch, asked for help after wetting pants. Used the last spare outfit.

Agreed next step: Parent will bring a fresh spare outfit at pickup.

Agree on one practical next step and who will do it.

Keep completed notes private. You don't need to upload them or share your child's details with this website.

When comfort needs attention

If using the potty hurts, or your child keeps holding back poop, contact your child's healthcare professional. Don't wait to finish a chart or increase rewards to push through it. These sheets don't diagnose or treat a problem.
