Once you have matched your crib’s required mattress dimensions and thickness, cleanup is a useful way to narrow the choice: wipe the surface, or remove an outer cover for the wash. The foam and innerspring options below have wipe-clean surfaces. Naturepedic MC46C adds a washable cover, with a 19-pound lifting tradeoff.
There is no need to pay more for a promise of safer sleep. A firm, flat, properly fitted mattress is the starting point for every option here. “Breathable” and “organic” do not establish that a mattress prevents SIDS.
The four choices below are full-size mattresses. Newton Original, Newton Mini and Naturepedic’s lightweight MC46 remain paused; the notes later in this guide explain why.
Four full-size mattresses at a glance
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to see the tradeoffs.
| Mattress | Construction and cleanup | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Moonlight Little Dreamer | Foam; waterproof fabric cover, wipe-clean | Gentle wipe-care only; cover-wear reports |
| Sealy Soybean Foam-Core EM710 | Foam; waterproof wipe-clean cover | Not wholly plant-based; longevity uncertain |
| Sealy Baby Firm Rest EM438 | Innerspring; waterproof wipe-clean cover | Some owners notice springs, bounce or noise |
| Naturepedic MC46C | Innerspring; washable outer cover over wipe-clean mattress | 19 lb; not wholly organic or foam-free |
Get the fit and sleep surface right first
First check your crib’s mattress dimensions and permitted thickness. A product described as standard size still needs to fit tightly in your crib. Follow the crib and mattress instructions together; don’t fill a gap with rolled towels or padding. If you are still assembling your nursery list, our newborn essentials checklist puts the mattress alongside the other newborn basics.
The AAP recommends putting babies on their backs for every sleep, on a firm, flat surface with a fitted sheet and no pillows, loose blankets, bumpers or soft extras. Use the labeled infant side throughout infancy. Standing up in the crib does not make a baby ready for the toddler side. Keep the mattress flat and the crib clear even if the cover is marketed as breathable.
Moonlight Little Dreamer: waterproof fabric over foam
Moonlight Little Dreamer makes sense if you want a foam mattress with a fabric-faced waterproof cover and are happy to wipe it clean. It has separate infant and toddler sides. The useful distinction is the cover’s construction, not a claim that the mattress will make a baby sleep longer or last through every sibling.
The cover is not a machine-washable laundry layer. Moonlight’s care instructions call for a damp sponge and mild soap; avoid diaper wipes, bleach and harsh cleaners. If removing and washing the outer cover is your priority, the Naturepedic below is a better match for that task.
Cover wear is the main reservation. Owners have reported tearing and powder or dark residue, including recent reports. Those reports do not identify the substance or establish a health effect, but they keep me from recommending this as a proven long-lasting cover. A separate sagging complaint also involved a dispute about a bowed crib support; the cause is unresolved. The Little Dreamer stays on this list for its foam-and-fabric construction, with that uncertainty made clear—without a claim of superior durability.

Sealy Soybean Foam-Core: a simple wipe-clean foam option
Sealy Soybean Foam-Core suits families who want a foam mattress with a waterproof surface they can wipe after a leak. The current EM710 model is described by Sealy as two-stage. Older reviews sometimes describe a single-stage version, so don’t use those reviews to identify the sides of a new mattress.
“Soybean” does not mean the core is made entirely from plants. The current materials label lists polyurethane foam and blended batting. Choose it because you want this construction and cleaning routine, not because the name suggests an organic mattress or a health advantage.
There is a tradeoff with the cover. Older owners report cracking and tearing, and some report sagging. The latest critical reviews visible in the exact-product results I checked were from 2021; they cannot tell us how today’s production will hold up. I would not buy this on the strength of a long warranty or assume it will stay in good condition for several children. For everyday care, Sealy advises gentle wiping with mild soap and water, followed by complete drying—not laundering the mattress cover.

Sealy Baby Firm Rest: a wipe-clean innerspring option
Sealy Baby Firm Rest is the simpler innerspring choice in this comparison. Model EM438 has a coil core with polyester batting and a waterproof wipe-clean cover. It is worth considering if you prefer coils to foam and don’t want a removable cover to wash and refit. That preference does not make coils inherently safer or more durable.
Expect a different feel from a foam slab. Some owners report noticeable springs, bounce or cover noise; others are satisfied with its firmness and fit. These reports help explain the feel you may notice; they cannot predict how your baby will sleep. I would skip this model if quiet fabric or a smooth, less springy feel is central to your choice. Use Sealy’s mild-soap wipe-care guidance and let it dry before replacing the sheet.
The name matters here: Firm Rest EM438 is not Sealy Ortho Rest. A 2026 consumer incident report about a protruding spring names Ortho Rest. It is a serious report, but it does not identify this Firm Rest model. I have not used the shared brand name either to transfer that incident to EM438 or to promise that EM438 cannot fail.

Naturepedic MC46C: a removable outer cover for the wash
Naturepedic Organic Breathable 2-Stage Innerspring is the choice here for families who want to wash an outer cover while keeping the mattress underneath wipe-clean. Choose model MC46C, the 19-pound innerspring version. The lightweight MC46 is a different mattress and remains paused below.
The removable outer cover can be machine washed and dried according to its care label. Underneath is a waterproof surface you can wipe with a damp cloth and mild cleanser, then dry fully. That arrangement gives you a useful cleaning option without having to soak a mattress core. In The Bump’s test of the innerspring version, the parent tester found the removable cover and wipe-clean surface helpful for spit-up; she also noted some rustling. That is one family’s experience, not a lifespan test.
The lifting weight is a real drawback for sheet changes. Materials also need a precise description: this mattress uses organic cotton components, steel springs, polyethylene and other materials. Its law label and materials disclosure include polyethylene foam. It is not wholly organic or foam-free. Buy it for the cotton components and cleaning arrangement if those matter to you; I would not pay for it expecting breathability to prevent a sleep-related death.

Mini cribs and playards need different checks
A mini crib needs its own compatibility check. Don’t choose a replacement from a “38 by 24” description alone: the exact crib model, allowed mattress thickness and the mattress maker’s tested compatibility matter. A mini-crib mattress is not automatically an approved replacement for a playard pad. For a playard, use the pad supplied with it and follow that product’s instructions; do not add another mattress to make it softer.
Why three earlier recommendations remain paused
Newton Mini
The Newton Mini recommendation remains paused. A June 2026 SaferProducts.gov consumer report describes loose, pillowing covers on an original mattress and replacements. The model number in that report relates to a cover, so it does not establish that every currently sold Mini mattress is affected. The unresolved fit of the sleep-surface cover is enough to keep the buying recommendation paused. Do not use hot washing or drying as a homemade attempt to shrink a loose cover into a safe fit.
Newton Original White
Newton Original White also remains paused. A September 2026 owner report describes a sunken center and a baby becoming stuck there while trying to roll; a November 2025 verified-purchase review describes sagging after a month. These reports are not independently verified and do not establish the cause or frequency, but the concern about the flat sleep surface remains unresolved.
Naturepedic Lightweight MC46
Naturepedic Lightweight MC46 remains paused because exact-variant owner reports describe a central dip, one side sinking, or an uneven surface associated with rolling. These reports do not establish that every MC46 is defective. They also do not describe the MC46C innerspring construction recommended above. Recommending MC46C is not a claim that the lightweight model has been fixed.
These pauses are editorial decisions, not recall notices. If a mattress you own has a persistent dip, raised area, loose pillowing cover, exposed spring or deteriorating surface, stop using it for infant sleep and contact the manufacturer. Use another suitable infant sleep space in the meantime. Do not compensate with a topper, extra padding or a homemade support board.
Cleaning and using a mattress again
A waterproof mattress does not automatically need another waterproof pad. Follow its instructions for compatible bedding, and avoid adding soft or loose layers. Wash only the layer the manufacturer identifies as removable; don’t unzip an inner fire barrier because an outer cover can be washed. Low-emissions or foam certifications do not by themselves identify every material inside a mattress.
For reuse, condition matters more than the warranty length. Check that the mattress still fits, remains firm and flat, and has an intact cover. A worn mattress does not become suitable for another baby because the warranty is still running. If you are deciding what belongs on a registry, our baby registry checklist helps separate useful basics from optional additions.
